2021-22 ACAA Volleyball Award Winners Announced

HALIFAX, N.S. (Mar. 8, 2022) - The lion's share of the major 2021-22 ACAA volleyball hardware is headed to New Brunswick.

Mount Allison University outside hitter Sophie Landry was named the ACAA Women's Volleyball Player of the Year, becoming the first Mountie to claim the honour since Laurie Marchbank did it in the 2009-10 season.

Landry also picked up her second consecutive First Team All-Conference selection in the process, and it follows a season in which the fourth-year out of Charlo, N.B. racked up 131 kills and 101 digs, along with 32 service aces.

On the men's side, Gustavo Lobato became the second straight St. Thomas Tommie to be named ACAA Men's Volleyball Player of the Year, joining teammate and fellow First Team All-Conference member Christian Christie.

The fourth-year left side out of Aracaju, BRA was a dominant, yet efficient force for St. Thomas, leading the team with 117 kills while pacing the ACAA in both hitting percentage at .373 and service aces, finishing the year with 31 to help the Tommies to a 9-1 regular season and consistent placement in the CCAA national rankings.

St. Thomas volleyball student-athletes added a second piece of hardware, as Abigail Lanteigne was named the ACAA Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Year, on top of earning a Second Team All-Conference selection. The Fredericton native finished second in the ACAA in hitting percentage (.243) behind teammate Maddie MacGregor, finishing the season with 86 kills, 133 digs and 26 aces.

After a dominant season in which he led the ACAA with 165 kills, Holland College's Luke Hyde was named the ACAA Men's Volleyball Rookie of the Year, as the Stratford, Ont. native added 89 digs and 21 service aces.

Meanwhile, a pair of familiar faces took home Coach of the Year honours, with Mount St. Vincent's Derrick Brooks taking his seventh ACAA Women's Volleyball Coach of the Year award, and Henri Mallet of St. Thomas University earning his third consecutive ACAA Men's Volleyball Coach of the Year award.
