Seawolves capitalize on late penalty kick to upset top-seed Hurricanes in semifinals

In an intense match to begin the 2025-26 ACAA Soccer Championships on Saturday morning, the women's fourth-seed University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves pulled off the ultimate upset, stunning the first-place Holland Hurricanes in semifinal action in Cornwall, P.E.I.

A game offensively dominated by the Hurricanes, the Seawolves executed a fantastic defensive effort and rallied off an electric fan base behind them. Holland was strong at building plays, but struggled to finish against an aggressive UNBSJ squad.

After over 70 minutes of silence, it was a 74th-minute penalty kick that changed everything. Seawolves leading scorer and ACAA All-Conference First Team player Scarlette MacDonald sealed the deal to break the tie and give UNBSJ the lead.

The Hurricanes did everything they could to remain in contention, but through every corner kick and playmaking attempt, their tank ran out of fuel and time ran out.

Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Brzezicki earned the shutout in net for UNBSJ, earning her the Seawolves Player of the Game. Kina Azuma was awarded the Hurricanes Player of the Game.

The Seawolves advanced to the finals for the first time since 2022 and will fight for gold on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. against the winner of the other semifinal game between MSVU and UKC.
