The UNB Saint John Seawolves battled the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics in ACAA women's volleyball action Sunday in Saint John.
The Seawolves jumped out to an early lead and held on to take the first set 26-24. The Mystics rebounded to win the second set 25-20 and third set 25-17. The Seawolves recovered to win the a very tight fourth set 25-23 but the Mystics found a way to win 15-13 in the fifth set to close out a thrilling match.
Madison Urquhart had an outstanding day for the Mystics with 19 kills and 16 digs. Janine Marshall added 15 kills and 11 digs. Kenzie Brimicombe had 20 digs, Jaylene Fraser finished with 58 assists and Laura MacDonald had 12 kills and 4 service aces for the winners.
The Seawolves got a big performance from Dayna Alexander who had 13 kills and 12 digs. Jenna DeGooyer had 8 kills and 10 digs, Taylor McGrattan contributed 28 assists and 13 digs and Meagan McCrea-Kosak had 16 digs.
The Mystics continued their uncanny ability to close out close matches and improved to a perfect 12-0 which is good for first place in the ACAA. The Seawolves proved their 7-5 record is misleading as they continue to get better and must now be considered a serious playoff contender.
The Seawolves travel to play the Dal AC Rams Saturday, January 19 at 1:00 PM while the Mystics visit Mount Allison University for a 1:00 PM.
